MagnaCut Steel: What does it mean?

MagnaCut Steel, a Powder metallurgy Stainless Steel, is designed explicitly for knife making. MagnaCut Steel is designed to provide great balance in toughness and edge retention. It also has corrosion resistance.

MagnaCut was given the name to match the high-speed steels of Vanadium Alloys Steel Company (VASCO). Magna, a Latin name, means “amazing” or “great”, so it’s fantastic knife steel.

CPM MagnaCut steel was created by Larrin Tom (a well-known steel author), but it was produced by Crucible Industries in 2021. This steel has a unique design, which aims to reduce the Chromium content to dissolve any chromium carbides that may be present during heat treatment.

Because of the dissolution of large quantities of softer chromium carbides, the end product will contain small amounts of Vanadium and Niobium hard carbides.

Its alloy composition contains the perfect amount of Chromium, Carbon and gives it superior wear resistance and toughness to other knife steels.

MagnaCut Steel is resistant to corrosion

MagnaCut steel has a lower Chromium content. However, it is expected to have poor corrosion resistance. It also provides excellent corrosion resistance. The crucible datasheet shows MagnaCut’s corrosion resistance is superior to other stainless steels like CPM 20CVS35VN, and S110V.

MagnaCut’s high corrosion resistance is comparable to Vanax and LC200N, according to Larrin Thomas, the developer. MagnaCut uses fewer chromium carbides.

MagnaCut should be heated to achieve optimal hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. This is done by using a 2050degF plate/oil quench, followed by a 2×2 hour 350degF temper. This will give you a hardness between 61 and 62.5 Rc.

You can attain high hardness by following another heat treatment cycle, but edge retention will prevail over other performance attributes like toughness and corrosion resistance.

CPM MagnaCut and CPM 4V

CPM 4V is the equivalent of CPM MagnaCut. This non-stainless metal can be used. Both sheets of steel are extremely tough at various levels of hardness, and therefore they can withstand breaking or chipping.

Both MagnaCut 4V steel and MagnaCut provide the same degree of edge retention. MagnaCut is more resistant to corrosion but performs as an enhanced version of CPM 4V.

MagnaCut vs CPM3V

MagnaCut Steel is made from stainless steel, while CPM3V is non-stainless. MagnaCut knives are more resistant to corrosion than CPM3V knives.

MagnaCut vs CruWear

Another difference is that CruWear Steel knives slightly outperform MagnaCut steel knives when it comes to toughness. CPM CruWear has fewer Chromium Elements, which is why MagnaCut and CruWear steels have a different toughness.

MagnaCut or Vanax?

Vanax Steel is slightly better than MagnaCut in Edge retention, Corrosion resistance, but only by a small margin. Even more remarkable is the fact that MagnaCut steel, despite having a low chromium content, almost matches Vanax’s corrosion resistance properties.

MagnaCut steel is slightly better than Vanax in terms of edge retention. However, this margin is very small. MagnaCut’s strength is where Vanax shines. MagnaCut blade Steel will last longer in tougher applications than Vanax.

MagnaCut vs LC200N

HTML200N, also known as Z Finit is a nitrogen-based steel produced by ZAPP. It is used in all Spyderco Knives that are intended for use in corrosive environments. LC200N steel is more resistant to corrosion than other steels on the market, except for Vanax steel which is nitrogen-based.

Larrin Thomas’s MagnaCut steel alloy composition is amazing. It is comparable in terms of corrosion resistance to LC200N steel. Quantitatively, LC200N beats MagnaCut by a small margin.

MagnaCut vs. S45VN

MagnaCut steel is superior to CPM S45VN on almost all fronts. MagnaCut steel has twice the strength of CPM S45VN steel. MagnaCut’s low chromium content makes it more resistant to corrosion than S45VN. MagnaCut’s excellent resistance to corrosion is due to the elimination chromium carbides, according to Larrin.
