What is CPM10V Steel?
CPM 10V steel, which is a high-performance tool metal, is produced by the Crucible Particle Metalurgy process. It is composed of carbon and vanadium, which gives it excellent wear resistance as well as toughness.
CPM 10V steel is strong, durable and resistant to wear. This steel can be used to replace other carbide-steels for cold work tooling. It is perfect for tough applications.
10V tool steel can also be known as AISI A11 or PM A11. Because of its unique properties, 10V is used in many industries to make knives blades, punches, and dies for cold forming tools and woodworking tools.
CPM 10V Steel composition
- Carbon B 2.45%: Enhances edge retention, hardness, and tensile strengths. It increases steel resistance to wear, abrasion and corrosion.
- Chrome Cr 5.25: Formation of Chromium caride. This increases hardness, tensile and corrosion resistance of your blade.
- Molybdenum Mo 1.3%: This improves machinability.
- Vanadium V 9.75% – Increase wear resistance, toughness and corrosion resistance.
CPM 10V Properties
CPM 10V Steel Hardness
CPM 10V steel has an HRC of 60 according to the Rockwell Hardness Scale. However, the hardness varies depending on the heat treatment and can reach a high hardness of up 64HRC. You can harden this steel by using salt, vacuum, or atmosphere. However, each method will produce different results and it needs to be preheated before high heat.
Steel toughness CPM 10V
CPM 10V steel’s toughness is one of its strengths. It is more tough than high-end stainless steels S30V or CPM154. It is made using the CPM process which results in finer carbides. This makes it tougher.
CPM10V steel can also maintain exceptional toughness even when it is high-hardened. It’s an alternative to steels that cannot maintain high toughness and high hardness.
Wear resistance to CPM 10V steel
CPM 10V has excellent wear resistance due to the high levels of vanadium-vanadium carbides. This steel is distinguished by its wear resistance.

CPM 10V Steel Edge retention
Edge retention refers to how long a blade remains sharp after continuous or daily use. CPM10V has excellent edge retention due to its high hardness and wear resistance. After a few hours of use, you will not need to sharpen knives made from this steel.
Its use as a tool steel is a sign of its ability to retain sharpness. CPM 10V is able to maintain sharpness in even the most difficult applications, such as batoning. It makes a great camp knife. A few steels such as Maxamet can improve the 10V sharpness.
CPM 10V Steel Corrosion Resistance
CPM 10V steel has a low corrosion resistance. CPM 10V steel has low levels of chromium, which is not enough to make it stainless. Avoid the CPM 10V varieties if you want knives that can withstand corrosive and wet environments.
If you’re interested in its other properties, such as wear resistance and toughness you can combat corrosion and stains with proper care and maintenance. After each use, wash and dry your knives. To prevent oxidization, you can apply oil to the blade during storage.
Poor corrosion resistance is a problem with most tool steels, including D2 and Sleipner.
Look for knives that are high in chromium or nitrogen elements if you’re looking for knifes with exceptional corrosion resistance. Steels such as LC200N and S45VN are excellent choices.
Sharpening CPM10V Steel
CPM 10V steel can be difficult to sharpen due to the vanadium carbides, which are more durable than other abrasive material. To sharpen 10V, you will likely need a diamond sharpening device.
It is difficult for beginners to maintain a sharp edge when using 10V steel. It is sharp for a long time, so you don’t need to sharpen it often.
CPM 10V equivalent steel and CPM10V comparison
CPM 10V vs K390
Despite their different compositions, 10V and K390 have almost identical levels of hardness. K390 steel has a reputation for being tough and it holds up even against CPM10V. 10V steel is slightly better than K390 in edge retention, but both have poor corrosion resistance.
It is difficult to find 10V-grade steel. K390’s performance is very close and can therefore be considered the best CPM10V steel equivalent. It is possible to get unlabeled knives that have both 10V and k390.
Maxamet Steel may also be equivalent, but it often outperforms it. Therefore K390 is your best choice.
CPM 10V vs. S30V
10V steel is more durable than S30V, has better wear resistance, toughness and edge retention. Vanadium carbide in 10V steel gives it a better edge retention performance. It will still cut, even if the material is a little blunt. Both S30V and S30V are more resistant to corrosion, but they can be difficult to sharpen.
CPM 10V VS. S110v
The high-chromium stainless steel is S110V. While 10V isn’t stainless, S110V has a higher corrosion resistance than 10V. S110V and 10V are both high-performance steels when it comes to edge retention. Recently, 10V production knives have outperformed S110V slightly in edge retention. You will have outstanding edge retention with either the 10V or S110V steels.
Both steels require experience and patience to be sharpened. They are very wear resistant, so it is not an easy task.
CPM 10V vs. D2 Steel
CPM 10V is made with vanadium carbides, which make it four times harder than D2. It also surpasses D2 wear resistance. This steel has better wear resistance and edge retention. D2 steel is more resistant to corrosion and can be sharpened easily. D2 steel is more popular than 10V in knife making due to its availability and ease-of-use heat treatment. However, 10V is a better steel.
CPM 10V vs. 154CM
CPM 10V has a better wear resistance than 154CM and edges retention. Both steels are similar in toughness. 154CM is more resistant to corrosion than the other steels. It is made of stainless steel and has higher levels of Chromium than 10V. 154CM is easy to sharpen and more affordable.
Is CPM 10V good knife steel?
Yes! CPM 10V knife steel is a great choice because of its hardness, edge retention and ease-of-machinability. There are a lot of steels that can match it in terms of edge retention and toughness. It is not resistant to corrosion so it may not be suitable for you if your knife needs to be used in humid and wet conditions.
