What is CPM Steel D2 Steel?
CPM D2 Steel is a version of D2steel, produced using the CPM technology. CPM D2 can be obtained by powdering regular D2 and then re-smelting it. This steel has small-sized, evenly distributed carbides that provide better edge retention and wear resistance.
CPM D2 can be easily shaped by heat treatment and will produce sharp blades even when they are used every day for difficult applications.
This steel is not stainless steel, which is the main drawback. It is not considered stainless steel because of the amount of Chromium it contains. If not taken care of, it can quickly rust and stain.
Let’s take a look at the properties and uses of this steel in knives:
CPM D2 Composition
- Carbon 1.55%: Enhances edge retention, hardness, and tensile strengths. It increases steel resistance to wear, corrosion, and abrasion.
- Chromium Cro 11.50%: Chrome Increases the hardness, tensile and corrosion resistance of a blade.
- Molybdenum Mo 0.9%: Increases machinability, corrosion resistance.
- Vanadium V 0.80% : This is vanadium carbide that forms hard vanadium in combination with other elements to improve wear resistance.
- Manganese Mn 0.45%: Increases steel’s strength and hardness. The steel’s hardenability can be improved by adding more manganese to it when it is heated.
- Silicon Si 0.4%: Increases strength, heat resistance.
- Phosphorus P 0.033%: Increases hardness and machinability.
- Sulfur S 0.03%: Increases machinability.
CPM D2 Properties
CPM D2 Steel Hardness
CPM D2’s Rockwell hardness is 59-61HRC according to the Rockwell scale. The manufacturer may have used different heat treatments to determine the hardness. This hardness level will ensure that your blades have good edge retention and wear resistance.
Wear resistance to CPM D2 steel
CPM D2’s excellent wear resistance is one of its best features. This is due to the high Carbon content and fine carbides.
CPM D2 is an improvement on the D2, and it’s excellent in wear resistance. You can expect nothing less when it comes to wear resistance.
This steel is more resistant to abrasion than knives made of stainless high carbon steels.
CPM D2 Steel Edge retention
Edge retention is another feature that CPM D2 knives have. This steel’s high carbon and carbide content increases its hardness which results in excellent edge retention.
CPM D2 knives are a great choice if you’re looking for a knife that can be used for tough applications and doesn’t require frequent sharpening.
Steel toughness CPM D2
CPM D2 hard steel is not the most tough. It isn’t the best, but it has a greater toughness than D2.
Powder metallurgy reduces the size of the carbide, which results in a tougher D2.
This steel is strong enough to withstand heavy cutting tasks like light chopping, without cracking or chipping. For heavy cutting tasks like batoning it is better to buy knives made of steel with a higher toughness than CPM D2.
Sharpening CPM-D2 steel
CPM-D2 steel knives can be more difficult to sharpen than the original D2. This is due to their high hardness and wear resistance.
This steel’s blades are not easily worn and take longer to sharpen.
It is not impossible to re-sharpen knives. However, it will require a lot of energy and time.
Steel corrosion resistance CPM D2
CPM D2 isn’t stainless steel. It can rust easily, especially if not properly cared for. CPM D2 knives will require more care because of the low chromium level.
Avoid soaking CPM D2 knives in water to prevent them from rusting. After each use, wash them and dry them.
CPM D2 Steel Equivalent to Other Steels
CPM D2 vs. D2
CPM D2 steel, a variation of D2, was introduced to the market in 2007. CPM D2 powder metalurgisty process produces finer carbides. This makes it more resistant to wear, edge retention and heat treatment than D2.
CPM D2 has a higher Chromium content but it is not stainless. It will need some maintenance to prevent corrosion and rusting.
CPM D2 vs. S30V
CPM D2 and S30V are completely different knife steels. S30V steel is a more refined and balanced steel. It offers superior performance in almost all aspects to CPM D2.
S30V is high quality stainless steel that has a high chromium content. This alloy provides better resistance to corrosion.
S30V knife steel is better than CPM-D2 in terms of edge retention. It contains more vanadium, which aids in the formation vanadium carbides. Vanadium carbides excel in edge retention and hardness.
CPM D2 is superior to S30V in toughness. CPM D2 knives are less likely to crack or chip when used in tough applications than S30V. CPM D2 knives are more tough due to their low hardness and lack of higher amounts of Chromium carbides.
CPM D2 vs. S35VN
CPM S35VN is an enhanced version of S30V steel that has added Niobium. It is stronger than S30V steel due to its improved alloy. The S35VN toughness is slightly lower than CPM D2, so a CPM D2 knife with a steel blade will outlast an S35VN knife.
However, S35VN steel beats non-stainless CPMD2 in corrosion resistance and rust resistance. S35VN will provide better edge retention than CPMD2 due to its higher Vanadium elements that aid in formation of hard vanadium carides.
Steel S35VN offers better performance and is a better choice than CPM D2. It is slightly more expensive than its counterpart S30V but it is totally worth it.
CPM D2 vs CPM154
CPM-D2 steel does not contain stainless steel because it has low chromium content. CPM-154 steel, on the other hand, is true stainless steel that has a high level of chromium. CPM 154 steel is more resistant to corrosion than a CPM D2 blade.
CPM D2’s toughness was increased by the refined powder metallurgy process. It surpasses CPM154 in toughness. CPM D2 has a low Chromium content, which makes it less likely to form chromium carides.
CPM 154 has a slightly higher edge retention than CPM D2. CPM 154’s high Rockwell hardness results in better edge retention. CPM154 knife steel is more balanced than CPM D2 knife stainless steel.
CPM D2 vs. M390
Crucible Industries produces CPM D2 steel, while Bohler makes M390. M390 is a premium steel. M390 is a premium steel that offers exceptional edge retention and wear resistance, while remaining stainless steel.
Bohler M390 steel is more resistant to corrosion, edge retention and wear than CPM D2.
CPM-D2 will provide greater toughness than M390 because of the M390’s high hardness, which can be prone to cracking. CPM D2 will allow you to achieve a sharper edge faster than M390 steel.
M390 steel knives can be considered premium and more expensive than other steels, including CPM D2. This is due to their superior edge retention capabilities and corrosion resistance.
Is CPM D2 good knife steel?
CPM D2 steel is a good knife steel due to its wear resistance, edge retention and toughness. It is not stainless steel, so it needs extra care to prevent rusting. It is important to note that the CPMD2 steel composition is very similar to that found in CTS XHP Steel.
CPM D2’s performance is very similar to XHP’s, with the exception that XHP has a much higher chromium content which will give it a better resistance to corrosion. These two knife steels have negligible differences in edge retention and toughness. CTS XHP steel knives are a better choice than CPM D2 knives.
