What is CPM Steel 4V?
CPM 4V is a steel made from powder metal. It was produced by Crucible Industries following the Crucible Particle Metalurgy process. This was made to improve CPM 3V but is more costly and has a lower toughness.
This steel is extremely tough and wear resistant due to the combination of its chemical components. It is ideal for making knives and tools that require wear resistance, strength and toughness.

- Vanadium V 3.85%: It inhibits grain growth in high-temperature processing and heat treatments, which increases steel’s strength and toughness. It forms carbides, which increase wear resistance.
- Tungsten W 0.4% Improves wear resistance, hardness, and is most commonly added to tool steel.
- Manganese Mn 0.4%: Increases steel’s strength and hardness. The steel’s hardenability can be improved by adding more manganese to it when it is heated.
- Silicon Si 0.80%: Increases strength, heat resistance.
